Small Sided Football (SSF) in 2010 for the Under 6 to Under 10 age groups

Football Australia announced the nationwide introduction of SSF in 2008. This innovative change is part of the National Football Development Plan.  By 2011 all age groups from Under 6 to Under 11 will be playing SSF.

All Moggill FC Under 6 and Under 7 games in season 2010 will be played in house. Fixtures below.

Our U8, U9 and U10 fixtures will be played within the Football Brisbane Pool (home and away).

Why change?

Officials at the national level recognised the need to introduce SSF as the standard playing format for children under the age of 11 in Australia. The justification for taking such an approach is based on the following criteria:

  • more fun and individual enjoyment due to smaller fields and simplified rules
  • more playing time, which maximises individual participation and involvement
  • far more repeated touches of the ball by all players on the field
  • more shots on goals
  • more involvement leads to greater improvement in fitness

Importantly, a significant amount of research has been conducted in countries where SSF are prevalent, which overwhelmingly highlights benefits such as more touches, greater participation as well as more enjoyment for the children.
